Dostoyevsky’s character above is rather an abstract model in our discourse about the addiction. Alcoholism as a conscious and totally will-controlled phenomenon is a rare thing, in my opinion. Although, I think drinking stories suggest an evident analog. We mean John O'Brien’s Leaving Las Vegas, a novel we spoke about earlier. Unlike its film version the novel itself shows two types of addicts: Ben willing to go his woeful way to the end and Sera trying to break with these vicious bonds. As a matter of fact, both the types can be generalized and even named somehow. Let’s find an analog to Ben and go back to Dostoyevsky. The Notes from the Underground main character phenomenon is in Russian tradition an insignificant individual. The society has pressed this individual to unbearable conditions. However, the individual instead of trying to raise up accepts the game rules and shows deep disrespect to all social structures. We depart from the subject, but a similar viewpoint gave forth, for example, the Russian revolution, European anarchism and extremism like Red Brigades in Italy. Getting drunk to spite everybody, killing himself or herself with alcohol is also an existing life philosophy. Let’s call this type convinced addicts. Even resorting to the sophisticated methods of psychoanalysis we’ll never learn if this philosophy is really an overarching idea or just a form of sheltering someone’s helplessness, impossibility to cope with life hardships. But these people often proceed to completion not only about alcohol, destroying social foundations, like Russian Bolsheviks. Nevertheless, every action done fails to bring them satisfaction anyway, and any admonition to bow to the reality stumble upon the wall of misunderstanding. However, having descended from the heaven of philosophy we face even one more problem. One may think it’s exaggeration to believe the social world is evil, but the fact that life on earth is no heaven is beside any doubt. Watching the flows of migration, I remind myself of a stereotype: people risk their lives to get a new life part of which they invented in their own mind. However, even in a happiest world the imagined land flowing with milk and honey meets them in a rather tough way.
